Explorations in Natural Language Processing
Event on 2016-04-07 18:30:00
This Meetup will feature two talks from data scientists focusing on natural language processing. Dr. Rutu Mulkar-Mehta will go over the basics of natural language processing through several use cases, and Lekha Bhargavi will use NLP to show gender differences in the summary texts of LinkedIn profiles. This talk is cohosted with the Natural Language Processing Meetup Group. Opening Speaker: Using NLP to Discover Gender Differences in Professional Contexts Gender Differences in workplaces has become a much-discussed topic in the recent past, much more so than ever before. Companies all across the country are making a conscious effort to overcome any explicit or implicit Gender Bias in an effort to encourage and retain a highly capable women workforce in the industry. Are there any significant differences in how men and women describe themselves in a professional context? Various NLP techniques were applied on the summary texts of LinkedIn profiles to find an answer to this question. The talk will focus on the methods used and discuss the findings. About the Speaker Lekha Bhargavi spent 12+ years at Amazon during which time she led the Global Retail Forecasting team when the team was actively migrating to Machine Learning models and built up the Abuse Prevention Team within the Risk Management Organization. She then moved to Cape Town to set up  the Supply Chain and Operations team for the first life-style e-commerce company in South Africa. She is now back in Seattle doing what she fell in love with a long time ago – working with data as a Data Scientist in residence at Galvanize. Keynote presentation: Introduction to Natural Language Processing In this talk, Dr. Rutu Mulkar-Mehta will describe the basics of any language processing task. We will talk about language, getting lexical resources for experiments, parts of speech, and how to identify importances of words.  Dr. Mulkar-Mehta will also go over some NLP use cases, where NLP is used for several different tasks such as text classification, Sentiment Analysis, Information Extraction, Information Retrieval, Question Answering, Text Summarization and Machine Translation.  Audience Level: Novice About the Speaker Dr. Rutu Mulkar-Mehta is the founder of a local Seattle startup called Ticary Solutions, for custom solutions in Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Machine Learning. She also teaches Data Analytics at the Level Program at the Northeastern University. She received her Ph.D. from University of Southern California in Computer Science, with a specialization in NLP. Rutu loves languages – both Natural Languages and Programming languages.
